Amazon-owned robotaxi service Zoox has received approval from federal regulators to begin charging customers for rides, a significant first for a purpose-built autonomous vehicle. Zoox's specialized AV, which notably lacks a steering wheel or brake pedals, has been offering free rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco, with over half a million passengers having experienced the service so far. The vehicle's design, described as resembling a "toaster on wheels," distinguishes it from competitors like Waymo and Tesla.

"Today marks an important milestone for Zoox and the future of autonomous mobility," stated Zoox's Chief Executive Aicha Evans. The company plans to commence charging for rides in Las Vegas starting next month, signaling a new phase in its operational rollout and commercialization of autonomous transportation.
