Washington Post Ordered to Rehire Columnist Karen Attiah

An arbitrator has directed the Washington Post to reinstate opinion writer Karen Attiah, ruling that the newspaper lacked sufficient cause to fire her after she posted comments on social media following the fatal shooting of political commentator Charlie Kirk. Arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa determined that Attiah’s termination was disproportionate and that she did not commit gross misconduct. The decision requires the Post to provide full back‑pay and benefits.

Attiah, represented by the Washington‑Baltimore News Guild and Democracy Defenders Fund, said she was performing her duty as an opinion journalist. The Washington Post acknowledged the arbitration outcome. Kirk, co‑founder of Turning Point USA, was killed at a speaking event in Utah on Sept. 10.

Attiah’s posts questioned America’s response to political violence and the performative mourning of a white man who espoused hatred.
