Thales Posts 75% Defense Order Surge Amid Global Tensions

French defense contractor Thales posted a strong first‑quarter order book, driven by soaring demand for air‑defence systems amid the Ukraine war and heightened tensions in the Middle East. The company said orders reached 4.65 billion euros ($5.48 billion), outpacing analysts’ consensus of 4.85 billion euros.

Growth was especially pronounced in the defence segment, which recorded 75% organic growth in orders. That rate, measured at constant scope and exchange rates, signals that new radar and missile‑countermeasure contracts are flowing from governments scrambling to plug aerial‑threat gaps. European air‑force customers alone accounted for half of the new contracts.

The surge reflects broader geopolitical shifts: NATO fighters downed several Russian drones over Poland last year, while Iranian missiles and drones have struck Gulf infrastructure since the United States retaliated against Tehran in February. Such incidents have prompted defense budgets to prioritize modern air‑defence capabilities.

With orders up 23% on a reported basis and 27% organically, Thales’ results beat expectations and reinforce its position as a key supplier to European and Middle Eastern militaries. Investors will likely reward the earnings beat, while the firm’s backlog suggests continued revenue visibility through the rest of 2024.
