Proto-Town, a 1,200-acre campus in Lockhart, Texas, is transforming into an unconventional tech hub. This unusual community combines living quarters with workspaces, attracting robotics and energy startups to a suburban area just minutes from Elon Musk's Tesla headquarters. The business commune model represents a significant shift from traditional office environments, offering a new approach to startup development.

Founders and employees coexist in a ranch-style house and nearby trailer parks dubbed "man camps." Workers at the dozen firms on site share meals and often work extended hours on their startups. This communal living arrangement creates a 24/7 innovation ecosystem where professional and personal boundaries intentionally blur, potentially accelerating product development cycles.

The project emerged from the vision of 26-year-old Josh Farahzad and 28-year-old Merle Nye, who met at Duke University before collaborating with Texas politician John Cyrier. Their startup commune taps into Austin's growing tech scene while offering an alternative to Silicon Valley's expensive real estate, reshaping how tech communities form outside traditional centers.
