Remy Cointreau Beats Estimates on Cognac Growth

Remy Cointreau backed its outlook for sustained revenue growth after cognac sales picked up, particularly in parts of Asia. The French distiller said sales of its high-end cognac brands, Remy Martin and Louis XIII, were 7.7% higher organically over its fiscal first quarter through June, hitting 141.9 million euros ($161.6 million).

Total revenue came in at 223.2 million euros, beating analysts' expectations for a 0.5% slip to 219.7 million euros. Growth in cognac sales was strong in parts of Asia outside China, Remy said Wednesday. In China, a key market, sales of the spirit fell amid a still challenging market backdrop.

While overall cognac sales rebounded, the group's liqueurs & spirits division—housing the company's namesake orange liqueur as well as labels like Mount Gay rum and the Botanist gin—saw a 6.6% decline over the quarter, partly due to unfavorable timing effects as well as weak demand in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region and China.
