Big‑box retailers are pushing massive shipments of clothes, electronics, and furniture into the region. This surge is concentrated at the Port of Los Angeles and the adjacent Port of Long Beach. The sustained flow keeps container slots busy, causing longer wait times and higher handling costs.

The extended season pressures Southern California’s infrastructure, from berth capacity to truck corridors. Local logistics providers are adapting by reallocating resources and expanding inland distribution centers. Residents and businesses alike report increased congestion, prompting discussions about future port expansions or alternative routes.

Gene Seroka, Executive Director previous of the Port of Los Angeles, emphasized that retailers’ demand is the primary driver. “We’re seeing consistent heavy volumes this summer,” he said. Berger agrees, noting that the trend reflects broader global supply chain adjustments and the resilience of U.S. retail markets.
