Norfolk Southern reported an 11% increase in revenue, reaching $3.5 billion in the second quarter, driven by improving demand trends. Despite the revenue growth, income from railway operations saw a slight decline of 4.3%, totaling $1.12 billion.

Quarterly earnings per share were reported at $3.26. After accounting for one-time costs, including expenses related to its Union Pacific integration and the aftermath of the Ohio freight-train derailment, adjusted earnings stood at $3.52 a share. This figure surpassed analyst expectations, which, according to Fact Set, were for $3.31 a share.

The company's revenue of $3.5 billion also exceeded Wall Street's projections of $3.37 billion, indicating a positive shift in business conditions.
