Acting ICE Director David Venturella has divested of his Geo Group stocks and recused himself from all contracts and obligations related to detention, according to a letter sent to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.). Venturella previously worked at Geo Group, one of the nation’s largest private prison operators, from 2012 to 2023 before returning last year to the Department of Homeland Security, where he served during the Obama administration. He also worked as a consultant for the private prison company through Jan. 31, 2025, per an SEC filing.

The move comes amid growing scrutiny of private prison involvement in U.S. immigration detention. By divesting and recusing, Venturella seeks to avoid conflicts of interest that could influence policy decisions. The letter to Senator Warren details the specific scope of his recusal, covering all detention‑related contracts and other matters that involve the private prison company. This action reflects a broader trend of officials stepping back from ties to private prison operators to maintain public trust and transparency in immigration enforcement.

The agency’s announcement underscores its commitment to impartiality and highlights the increasing pressure on federal agencies to separate personal financial interests from official duties.
