Contemporary Amperex Technology, the world's largest battery maker and Tesla supplier, unveiled its latest fast-charging breakthrough at a much-anticipated technology day. The company introduced the Shenxing 3 battery, which it says can charge from 10% to 98% in approximately 6.5 minutes under normal temperatures—a feat that brings electric-vehicle fill-ups closer to the few minutes required to refuel a gasoline car.

The innovation tackles one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption. The company also released the Qilin condensed-state battery, which supports up to 1,500 kilometers of driving range for executive sedans, further addressing consumer range anxiety. CATL's announcements signal the company's push to maintain its dominant market position against growing competition from rivals.

As the leading supplier to automakers including Tesla, BMW, and Volkswagen, CATL's technological advances could intensify the industry-wide race to eliminate charging as a pain point for electric-vehicle buyers.
