Rolls-Royce anticipates an Airbus decision on a new, larger A350 variant within the next year. This potential A350-2000 could directly challenge Boeing's 777X. Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic indicated that a new, more powerful engine, based on their Trent XWB-84, would be necessary if Airbus proceeds with a larger design. Entry into service for such a variant is projected for the "early 2030s".

Airbus confirmed they are exploring "potential evolutions of the A350" to meet market demand for larger wide-body aircraft, with Emirates noted as a potential interested party. The planemaker also announced a €5bn share buyback program and an increased profit target.

Separately, Erginbilgic urged the UK government to support the development of a new engine for the short-haul market, warning that Rolls-Royce has other international options if UK funding is not secured. Decisions on engines for future narrow-body aircraft replacements are expected from both Airbus and Boeing in approximately two years.
