U.S. Natural Gas Futures Settle Lower on Production

Nymex natural gas settled down 1.6% at $2.690/mm Btu in early trading, pressured by rising production and comfortable storage levels despite strong weather-driven demand and recovering LNG feedgas flows.

Andy Huenefeld of Pinebrook Energy Advisors noted that lingering heat across Texas and the Southeast should support cooling demand through August, while LNG exports are poised to rise as maintenance concludes and new capacity ramps. However, increasing production as the shoulder-season approaches creates competing forces favoring a broadly balanced market.

By 0926 ET, gas for September delivery was off 2.2% at $2.672/mm Btu after weekend weather forecasts reduced near-term heat expectations. Eli Rubin of EBW Analytics suggested that while supply and weather headlines dominate, strengthening LNG demand could provide support if sustained. He expects higher supply and cooler weather may mark a seasonal low before autumn recovery.

Analysts see competing forces keeping the market balanced rather than driving sustained directional moves in either direction.
