Wall Street finished Tuesday on an upbeat note, with stocks posting modest gains. The Nasdaq composite led the way, rising 0.7%, while the Dow industrials and S&P 500 each added 0.3%. The move was supported by a retreat in Treasury yields, with the 10-year yield notching its largest one-day decline since June 24, and a drop in oil prices, as Brent crude fell 3.9% to $88.58 a barrel.

Investors are bracing for key events later this week, including July's personal-consumption expenditures index, Nvidia earnings, and Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's remarks at Jackson Hole. “There are a lot of moving pieces all moving at the same time,” said Warren Hurt, chief investment officer at F&M Trust.

Hurt noted that other concerns, such as tariff discussions with Canada and conflict in Iran, aren't having much effect on markets because earnings have held strong. Ottawa unveiled tariffs on $20 billion of American goods, while President Trump threatened to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.

Canadian banking heavyweights Bank of Nova Scotia and Bank of Montreal downplayed tariff concerns on earnings calls. Dick's Sporting Goods posted its largest decrease on record, losing almost one-third of its value. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's promised “economic D-Day” hasn't triggered the global fallout investors feared, as measures stopped short of penalizing China directly.
