Stocks Stall as Oil Prices Surge

U.S. stocks saw little change Wednesday as oil prices continued to climb. Brent crude surpassed $94 a barrel, a more than $20 increase from early July lows, driven by simultaneous disruptions at key global energy chokepoints. Traffic at the Strait of Hormuz dropped significantly, Houthi militants threatened blockades in the Red Sea, and Ukrainian drone strikes impacted Russian oil loadings. "Everything is going wrong at the same time," noted Sasha Foss, an energy markets analyst.

Amidst these developments, investors awaited a wave of major earnings reports. Super Micro Computer experienced a surge of nearly 20% following significant new orders. Other companies like AT&T saw gains after reporting improved revenue and customer additions. Conversely, GE Vernova experienced a decline despite raising its full-year guidance, while Nike shares fell after an analyst called its China sales strategy a misstep.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced a slight dip, as did the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite. The market saw more declining issues than advancing ones on the NYSE. In European markets, Airbus jumped after targeting increased operating profit and announcing a share buyback plan. Prologis also made a sweetened takeover bid for U.K. warehouse owner Segro.
