Reformation IPO: Fast Fashion Meets Sustainability

Reformation, the sustainable fashion brand known for its trendy dresses, made its public-market debut last week with shares rising 7.5% from its offer price. The company now holds a market cap of about $1 billion, roughly two times its annual revenue. This valuation sits between Gap and Aritzia, which trade at lower and higher multiples respectively. Fashion IPOs have been scarce since 2021's wave of Allbirds, Rent the Runway, Poshmark, and Lulu's Fashion Lounge. Most recent fashion debuts have underperformed, averaging just 1.7% returns over three years, according to Jay Ritter, a University of Florida professor emeritus.

Despite the industry's track record, Reformation has carved out a niche using a fast but sustainable model similar to Inditex's Zara. The brand tests new products in small batches before scaling successful ones. Its dresses range from $98 to $898, positioning it in the premium segment below luxury brands. Consumer demand remains strong as shoppers seek style and quality without luxury-level pricing.

The company has grown its revenue at a 34% compound annual growth rate from 2015 to 2025. Celebrities frequently wear Reformation clothing, and the brand has partnered with figures like Monica Lewinsky and divorce lawyer Laura Wasser for campaigns. Analysts note that luxury brands have lost some customers by raising prices without innovation, creating opportunity for mid-tier players like Reformation.
