Global Economy Faces Energy Crisis

The global economy is contending with an energy stranglehold on three fronts: the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, and the Black Sea. This comes at a time when global oil reserves are at their lowest levels in years.

Conflict in the Middle East has escalated, with Houthi militants disrupting tanker traffic through the Bab al-Mandeb strait. This Red Sea chokepoint, crucial for Saudi Arabia's crude exports, previously handled about 12% of the world's seaborne oil. Concurrently, Ukraine's attacks on Russian energy infrastructure and vessels in the Black Sea have impacted flows. Strikes near Novorossiysk, a key port for Russia's oil exports, temporarily halted pipeline operations.

Collectively, the closure of these three chokepoints threatens approximately a quarter of the world's oil supply. This situation presents a significant challenge for energy-dependent economies, testing their resilience and ability to adapt to these compounded disruptions.
