S&P Dow Jones Indices confirmed that Alphabet will replace Verizon in the Dow Jones Industrial Average effective before the market opens on June 29. The move swaps a telecom giant whose low share price contributes less than 0.5% to the price‑weighted index for a company with a far larger market cap and broader business reach, for the index's overall balance.

Index managers said the substitution broadens exposure to fast‑growing sectors such as digital advertising, cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, hardware, autonomous mobility, health‑tech and media distribution. Alphabet’s diversified portfolio fits the Communication Services category more accurately than Verizon, whose narrow wireline focus limits its representativeness. The change also coincides with a restructuring of another DJIA component, Honeywell, and better reflect investor sentiment.

Honeywell will spin off its aerospace unit on June 29, retaining the parent company in the index under the new name Honeywell Technologies while the aerospace business drops out. Analysts expect the revised composition to lift the DJIA’s relevance to investors tracking the evolving U.S. economy, as the index now leans more heavily toward high‑growth tech and industrial firms, enhancing its benchmark credibility globally.
