Wildfires forced the evacuation of over 300,000 people across France and Spain. In the Gironde region near Bordeaux, authorities issued orders for five additional localities as shifting winds and dry conditions worsened the fire’s spread, covering Karn? 162 square miles of pine forest.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the situation remains very unfavorable, noting the blaze generated its own winds and threatened Bordeaux. Firefighters, soldiers and European aircraft are dropping water and retardants to slow the spread.

Meanwhile in Spain, villages west of Madrid and near Valencia were emptied overnight. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the night was difficult but positive, while Valencia’s regional president Juanfran Perez Llorca declared the fire beyond capacity. A fatality in Manises marked Spain’s first death in these fires.

Italian coastal evacuations added to the crisis, with over 400 tourists rescued by sea from Peschici, Puglia. Authorities say the situation is now under control.
