WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak International Emergency

The World Health Organization classified the Ebola spread in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as a global health emergency on Saturday, a day after African health officials confirmed cases in Kinshasa and Kampala. Initial reports from Ituri Province listed 246 suspected infections and 80 deaths, though laboratory confirmation reached only eight patients.

Officials said the virus, a Bundibugyo strain without an approved vaccine, may be far more widespread than current data suggest. Eight of 13 samples tested positive, and clusters of unexplained community deaths appeared across three health zones and neighboring North‑Kivu. Humanitarian instability, high mobility and informal clinics complicate contact tracing.

The emergency designation obliges member states to mobilize resources, share experimental therapeutics and accelerate vaccine development. Urban transmission risk rises sharply in dense capitals, putting health workers and families at heightened danger. With no licensed treatment for this strain, the declaration underscores immediate funding needs for containment and research.
