Villegas Defeats Bains in California's 22nd District Primary

Randy Villegas, a progressive political scientist backed by Bernie Sanders, won the Democratic primary in California's 22nd Congressional District and will challenge David Valadao in November. Villegas, a Bakersfield-area school board trustee, ousted moderate Assemblywoman Dr. Jasmeet Bains in a high-stakes primary that underscored Democrats' internal divide between progressive and establishment wings.

The newly configured district, redrawn by Democrats last year, sits in California's Central Valley and has become a focal point for partisan control. Valadao, first elected in 2013, has survived multiple Democratic challengers, including narrow victories in 2018 and 2020 when he lost by just over 800 votes. Democrats view the race as critical for flipping Republican-held seats and reconnecting with Latino voters.

Villegas ran on a platform calling for Medicare for All, positioning his left-wing message as a pathway to energate voters disillusioned by rising health care costs. Interestingly, a Republican super PAC quietly supported Villegas over Bains, believing he would be the easier opponent for Valadao to defeat in the general election. Villegas himself faced attacks from both Republicans labeling him a socialist and Bains calling him "radical Randy."

The outcome sets up a rematch in a district where Democrats invested significant resources to flip the seat, with Villegas representing their boldest progressive bet in a Republican-leaning region.
