USA Today has named Jamie Stockwell as its new vice president of news, marking the third leadership change in three years for the nation's largest newspaper publisher. Stockwell, 49, previously served as deputy managing editor at The Washington Post before being laid off during recent staff reductions that cut the newsroom by over a third.

Stockwell brings extensive experience from major news organizations including The New York Times and Axios Local, where she expanded local newsletter operations to 30 markets. Her appointment comes as USA Today Company, formerly Gannett, seeks to strengthen its position as America's essential news source across its network of more than 200 local newspapers nationwide.

In her new role, Stockwell will focus on evolving USA Today's approach to meet changing reader habits and technological advances. She succeeds Caren Bohan, who departed after one year, and Terrence Samuel, who left suddenly in 2024. Stockwell begins March 30, reporting to senior vice president Monica Richardson, who praised her leadership in building high-performing teams and driving newsroom transformation.
