US Halts Poland Troop Deployment

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth abruptly canceled the deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland, part of a confusing realignment of American forces in Europe that has left military officials scrambling. The move comes just weeks after the Pentagon announced withdrawing 5,000 troops from Germany and canceling a missile-equipped artillery unit plan developed under the Biden administration.

President Trump has signaled troop cuts will go deeper than the 5,000 announced, threatening to also remove forces from Italy and Spain. The Pentagon's long-term aim requires European allies to shoulder more responsibility for continental defense, reflecting a strategic shift in U.S. military posture toward reducing American commitments abroad.

With approximately 7,400 U.S. troops currently stationed in Poland and 80,000 across Europe, the cancellations would reduce forces to 2022 levels before Russia's Ukraine invasion. Despite the withdrawals, Germany would still host the world's second-largest U.S. military presence at over 30,000 personnel, leaving NATO's eastern flank vulnerable amid rising tensions in the region.
