A U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter gunship crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, with both crew members successfully rescued according to sources briefed on the incident. Military officials have not determined whether the aircraft was shot down by Iranian fire, suffered mechanical failure, or encountered another problem, as the incident remains under investigation.

The crash occurred amid escalating regional tensions following recent military exchanges between Israel and Iran that have strained an already fragile cease-fire agreement. U.S. Central Command has deployed Apaches alongside armed drones and fighter jets to challenge Iran's de facto closure of the strategic waterway to commercial shipping.

Iran has downed approximately 30 unmanned Reaper drones and several U.S. fighter jets since the war began on February 28, but this marks the first lost Apache in the conflict. The helicopters operate in the strait to deter small-boat attacks and intercept drones while maintaining an aggressive posture during intermittent negotiations to reopen shipping lanes.

Since imposing its own maritime blockade on April 13, the U.S. has turned away 134 vessels and disabled seven others that ignored warnings, including a Palau-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman on Monday. These operations demonstrate the ongoing military pressure despite diplomatic efforts to restore normal commercial traffic through the critical passage.
