Two U.S. Soldiers Missing in Morocco Drill

U.S. Africa Command confirmed Saturday that two Army soldiers vanished during a joint exercise near Morocco’s Cap Draa Training Area. The men were on an early‑evening hike when one is believed to have slipped off a cliff into the Atlantic. Nearby troops formed a human chain, but a sudden wave swept rescuers into the sea, leaving the two service members missing. Rescue assets continue to circle the cliffs.

The incident unfolded amid African Lion 2026, the annual multinational drill that draws roughly 5,000 personnel from more than 40 nations between April 27 and May 8. Search teams have deployed Moroccan SA‑330 and AS332 Puma helicopters, a U.S. CH‑47 Chinook, surveillance drones, and naval frigates from France and Morocco, while mountaineers and divers scour the coastline. Weather conditions remain favorable for aerial sweeps.

U.S. officials declined to name the missing soldiers, and the investigation remains open. With the exercise serving as a showcase for U.S. and NATO interoperability in Africa, any prolonged disruption could prompt reassessment of future training commitments and logistics contracts tied to the region. The ongoing multinational rescue underscores the operational risks inherent in large‑scale overseas drills. No further casualties have been reported.
