Trump’s Primary Sweep Sends Massie Packing, Boosts Barr

President Trump’s backing swept Republican primaries in Georgia, Alabama and Kentucky on Tuesday, ousting the party’s most vocal critic, Rep. Thomas Massie. The Kentucky incumbent fell to retired Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein in the costliest House primary in recent memory. In six states, Trump‑endorsed candidates won outright or took first place, cementing his grip on the GOP base despite falling approval.

Georgia’s top Senate primary saw Rep. Mike Collins finish first but without a majority, forcing a runoff with former coach Derek Dooley. Collins leads the race, while Democrat Jon Ossoff entered the general election with $32.5 million in his war chest, according to the FEC. In Kentucky, Trump‑backed Rep. Andy Barr easily defeated former attorney general Daniel Cameron, positioning him as the favorite in November.

Other contests underscored Trump’s influence: retired firefighter Bob Brooks captured a Pennsylvania House seat in a district Trump carried in 2024, while Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who defied the former president in 2020, finished a distant third in the governor’s primary. The results demonstrate that Republican office‑seekers who reject Trump face still near‑certain defeat.
