Donald Trump has unleashed an expletive-ridden threat to “beat the f s*” out of Iran following its “surprise” missile attack against US bases in the Middle East. “We’ll be hitting them hard. They’re going to get a beating,” the US president told Fox News after meeting with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The US military said it intercepted the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps strike, while Saudi Arabia joined US strikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq, killing at least 20 soldiers as war spread throughout the region.

Iraqi prime minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi called an emergency meeting of the national security council after the joint Saudi-US strikes, which killed at least eight members of Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces. Iraq also cancelled a planned meeting with Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman. Meanwhile, Oman proposed a new regional deal aimed at resolving the conflict over the critical Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flowed before the war.

Other developments include Iran reportedly set to receive up to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air-defence missile launchers valued at $60-70m within weeks. Yemen’s Houthi group claimed to have shot down a Saudi reconnaissance drone, and Trump held separate White House meetings with Volodymyr Zelensky and Netanyahu. The US military’s top commander in the Middle East warned that cellphone videos shared by troops are helping Iran target bases, suggesting some deployed troops could be ordered to surrender their phones.
