President Trump on Saturday stated he is reviewing Iran’s latest proposal for a cease-fire in the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict but emphasized he cannot imagine it would be acceptable. The comments follow the president’s prior rejection of the offer, which was reportedly sent to Pakistani mediators on Thursday evening. Trump clarified to reporters that he had only been briefed on the “concept of the deal” and had not seen its details, with aides noting he plans to receive the exact wording before boarding a flight from Palm Beach. In a Truth Social post, Trump criticized Iran for not “paying a big enough price for what they have done over the last 47 years,” while Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi shifted the onus to the U.S. to choose between diplomacy or a confrontational approach, adding Iran is prepared to fight if military conflict resumes.

The cease-fire, extended by Trump on April 21, remains in limbo as negotiations stall. A key shift in the proposal is that Iran no longer requires Trump to lift the blockade on Iranian shipping in the Strait of Hormuz before face-to-face talks, per two senior Iranian officials. Iran has also expressed willingness to reopen the strait, a critical oil route, before Trump ends the blockade. However, Iranian officials said they would postpone discussing the future of Iran’s nuclear program until a permanent cease-fire is reached. This comes amid Trump’s repeated insistence that Iran must halt all nuclear enrichment, a core sticking point that Iran maintains it has a right to pursue. Days earlier, Trump canceled a trip by two top negotiators to Pakistan, stating Iran can contact him with a “better offer”.
