Trump doubts renewal of $2 trillion USMCA trade pact

President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday he was unsure about renewing the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, casting doubt on the pact that underpins $2 trillion in annual trade. His remarks, made from the Oval Office, echoed earlier claims that America does not need Canadian or Mexican goods. The comment arrived as U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai begins a new round of negotiations with Mexico and Canada.

U.S. officials have already exempted most goods from the agreement from tariffs, allowing $900 billion of imports from the two neighbours last year to enter duty‑free. Industry groups argue the deal is vital for sectors from autos to agriculture; Canadian potash supplies 80% of U.S. fertilizer imports, and Mexico purchases a third of American farm exports.

Farmers such as Iowa corn producer Bob Hemesath warned that Trump’s stance threatens a self‑inflicted wound for U.S. agriculture amid tight global markets. Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, is pushing diversification away from U.S. reliance, adding political risk to the trade talks. With the review deadline on July 1, negotiations will extend beyond that date, keeping markets on edge.
