The Trump administration has petitioned the Supreme Court to intervene after a federal appeals court blocked key provisions of an executive order restricting mail-in voting. The emergency application asks justices to overturn the lower court's decision that halted enforcement of the order's most significant measures.

The executive order, signed by President Trump, imposed new requirements on mail ballot collection, signature verification, and deadlines for ballot receipt. A three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that several provisions likely violated the Constitution and federal voting rights law, issuing a preliminary injunction against their implementation.

In its filing, the Justice Department argues the appeals court overstepped its authority and that the order falls within the president's constitutional power to protect election integrity. The administration contends that without immediate relief, the ruling will create confusion and undermine safeguards ahead of the November election.
