The Trump administration has approved a $2.8 billion sale of heavy bombs to Israel, including 40,000 one-ton bombs, according to a U.S. official. The package would be among the largest U.S. munitions deliveries to Israel.

The sale includes 20,000 each of MK-84 and BLU-117 bombs, plus 20,000 bunker-busting I-2000 warheads. Israel's use of such bombs in Gaza and Lebanon has drawn international condemnation for civilian harm.

The State Department sent the deal to congressional committees for informal approval. Secretary of State Marco Rubio can use emergency powers to bypass Congress, as done before. In 2024, the Biden administration paused a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs, but President Trump allowed it to proceed after taking office.

The deal reflects Trump's support for Israel despite disputes with Benjamin Netanyahu. It will likely face Democratic opposition and criticism from some Trump supporters like Tucker Carlson.
