Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to overturn a civil court verdict ordering him to pay E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million for defamation. The award stems from comments Trump made in 2019, which his lawyers argue are protected by presidential immunity.

This petition follows the Supreme Court's rejection of Trump's appeal in a separate case where he was ordered to pay Carroll $5 million. Carroll has since received that verdict amount, plus interest. In that earlier case, a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation related to statements made in late 2022.

The $83.3 million award is from a second trial where a jury found Trump civilly liable for defaming Carroll in 2019 after she publicly accused him of rape. The 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals had upheld this verdict. Trump's legal team contends the 2nd Circuit erred by not recognizing presidential immunity, asserting it was invoked multiple times despite not being explicitly named in the initial responsive pleading.
