Treasury Secretary Bessent Questions Climate Science, Urges Growth Focus

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested Tuesday that determining the root causes of global warming proves difficult, echoing sentiments from the Trump administration regarding climate change. Speaking alongside Danish academic Bjorn Lomborg, Bessent urged international financial bodies to prioritize poverty alleviation and economic growth over climate mandates.

These remarks followed Bessent's earlier directive for the World Bank to remove specific climate financing goals, favoring instead financing for "all affordable and reliable sources of energy," including coal and oil. This policy shift directly opposes the scientific consensus linking warming to fossil fuel emissions, which scientists assert is driving accelerating temperature rises.

Lomborg supported the Secretary, arguing the World Bank's "climate fixation" diverts essential funds from health and education in developing nations. Bessent framed climate alarmism as driven by "elite beliefs," suggesting policy was steered by a now-retracted study predicting massive economic decline by 2100.

Critics argue this stance willfully ignores mounting climate risks, citing severe events like the 2022 Pakistan floods, which caused over $40 billion in damage. The administration’s energy policy continues to favor domestic fossil fuel expansion over renewable transitions.
