A late Sunday afternoon tornado ripped through the Dirt Road subdivision in Howard County, Nebraska, leveling four newly constructed homes worth approximately $350,000 each in just 11 minutes. The storm system generated 160-mile-per-hour winds and carved a six-mile path of destruction, sparing surrounding properties while wiping out the entire subdivision.

Christina Parden had moved into her brand-new home only three weeks earlier, spending $50,000 for the lot plus $350,000 in construction costs. She and her daughter Graci Boersen took shelter in their basement with two small dogs as the tornado obliterated their home in under a minute. All four families survived without injury by following storm warnings and seeking basement refuge.

Governor Jim Pillen praised emergency responders and meteorologists for their role in protecting residents. County emergency manager Allen Wilshusen noted that families lost homes built within the past year, with total property losses exceeding $1.4 million across the subdivision. Insurance claims will determine whether rebuilding proceeds on the same lots.

The destruction represents a significant financial setback for homeowners who invested hundreds of thousands in new construction, highlighting the vulnerability of recent residential developments in tornado-prone regions of the Midwest.
