Todd Blanche's AG Nomination Stalled by Trump's IRS Deal

Todd Blanche's nomination for attorney general is facing significant hurdles in the Senate, largely due to his role in a controversial IRS settlement designed to protect President Donald Trump from audits. Two Republican senators, John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, are blocking the confirmation, citing concerns over the deal's provisions.

The core issue revolves around a $1.8 billion settlement with the IRS. While initially including a "slush fund" for Trump supporters, the focus has shifted to the immunity granted to Trump, his family, and businesses from IRS audits. Blanche, serving as acting attorney general since April 2, has defended the immunity aspect while downplaying the slush fund. This has created a political quandary for the Republican senators.

Trump, reportedly worried about potential IRS scrutiny during a future Democratic administration, has threatened to withdraw Blanche's nomination. However, legal mechanisms like the Federal Vacancies Reform Act of 1998 and the attorney general succession act of 1977 could allow Blanche to remain in an acting capacity indefinitely. The senators are pushing for the immunity deal to be significantly narrowed, highlighting concerns about favorable government treatment for the president.
