The district, stretching from Jackson to some of the state's poorest counties, has historically rewarded lawmakers who deliver resources and maintain strong local connections. His role as chairman of the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack also bolstered his national profile, though local concerns ultimately drove Tuesday's results.
