Terror Plot at Gracie Mansion: Two Teens Charged

Federal prosecutors charged two young men from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with attempting to detonate homemade bombs outside Gracie Mansion during a far-right protest. Emir Balat, 18, a high school senior, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, a recent graduate, were arrested Saturday after allegedly targeting demonstrators protesting against what they called the "Islamic Takeover of New York City."

Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said both suspects expressed support for the Islamic State during questioning. Balat was caught on video lighting and throwing a bomb toward protesters, while Kayumi admitted to watching ISIS propaganda on his phone. The men, who reportedly did not know each other before the incident, live in well-maintained suburban neighborhoods about 100 miles from New York City.

Neighbors expressed shock at the arrests, describing both families as kind and integrated into their communities. Balat's father, a Turkish immigrant granted asylum in 1998, became a U.S. citizen in 2017. Kayumi's Afghan immigrant parents reported him missing Saturday, fearing he had harmed himself. The case has raised questions about radicalization among suburban youth and the influence of extremist content online.
