U.S. solar installations fell 14% in 2025 as the Trump administration's policies targeted renewable energy development, according to a new industry report. Despite this decline, solar energy remained the largest source of new electricity generation added to the electric grid, though the amount added was significantly lower than the previous year.

Battery storage installations hit record levels in 2025, growing four times faster than just three years ago. While Trump officials criticized solar and wind power, they took a softer stance on large-scale batteries used by utilities and businesses. Energy Secretary Chris Wright frequently described renewable energy as inadequate while directing more federal funding to fossil fuels and nuclear projects.

The Solar Energy Industries Association warned that federal actions targeting the industry would lead to higher electricity prices and a less resilient energy system. Despite slowing growth in the U.S. and China, global solar installations are expected to triple by 2035, with countries like India and Saudi Arabia leading expansion.
