Socialist Leader's Housing Dispute Sparks Scrutiny

The question of where Gustavo Gordillo, a leader of the Democratic Socialists of America, lives has become a controversy. When profiled by The New York Times, the 38-year-old said he rents in Crown Heights, but public records list his address as a Bedford-Stuyvesant rowhouse his father purchased for $935,000 in 2019.

The New York Post reported the father saying his son lives in the two-story, nearly 2,000-square-foot row home valued between $1 million and $2 million, with a $1 million+ renovation underway. When pressed, Gordillo stopped responding. The DSA declined to comment on "personal details."

The dispute highlights scrutiny facing the ascendant left-wing movement. DSA leaders have vilified the wealthy while advocating for affordability in gentrifying neighborhoods like Bed-Stuy, long home to working-class Black families. Gordillo has listed the rowhouse as his permanent address since 2020.
