An 80-year-old San Francisco driver received two years of probation and 200 hours of community service for killing a family of four in a 2024 crash. Mary Fong Lau's speeding Mercedes SUV struck Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, his wife Matilde Ramos Pinto, and their two infant sons as they waited at a bus stop.

Lau will avoid prison time despite driving 75 mph in a 25 mph zone, with the judge citing her age, lack of criminal record, and health concerns. She must wait three years to reapply for her driver's license and faces restitution between $67,000 and nearly $300,000. The sentence sparked outrage among victims' relatives who felt it was too lenient.

The March 2024 crash occurred as the Brazilian family celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary, planning a zoo trip with their sons Joaquim and Cauê. Lau claimed she confused the gas and brake pedals. At Friday's hearing, she finally addressed the family, bowing three times and saying 'Sorry' in English, bringing many in the courtroom to tears.
