Champlain Hudson Power Express, a $6 billion hydropower project, will soon deliver clean electricity to New York City. The 339-mile buried transmission line from Quebec will provide 20% of the city's power when completed this spring, supplying approximately one million homes. Governor Hochul has championed the initiative as part of New York's clean energy transition despite federal headwinds.

Construction of North America's longest buried transmission line presented significant engineering challenges. Workers installed over two million feet of Swedish-made cable underwater and across land, requiring special boats to create sediment trenches for installation. The project also needed more than 700 land-use easements and represented the largest infrastructure endeavor for Transmission Developers, owned by Blackstone.

While Con Edison customers won't bear construction costs, New York ratepayers will see monthly bills increase approximately $1.65 in 2027 when the project becomes fully operational. Hydro-Québec will pay Blackstone for transmission access while selling electricity to the state's grid operator. The project allows building owners to purchase renewable energy certificates to offset emissions, though critics question this approach's environmental benefits.
