Dylan Lopez Contreras, a Bronx high school student, was released from federal custody on Wednesday after nearly ten months in ICE detention. His arrest last May at an immigration courthouse marked the first widely reported instance of a public school student in New York City being taken into federal custody since President Trump's return to office. Contreras, who had been attending Ellis Preparatory Academy, was arrested by ICE agents during a mandatory hearing. His detention became a focal point for immigration advocates and highlighted a stark escalation in Trump-era deportation tactics targeting immigrant students.

Following his arrest, a wave of similar detentions occurred. On June 4th, Derlis Snaider Chusin Toaquiza, an 11th grader from Ecuador, was arrested and sent to Texas. On June 24th, Joselyn Chipantiza-Sisalema, also from Ecuador, faced detention in Louisiana. Mamadou Mouctar Diallo, a 20-year-old attending Brooklyn Frontiers High School, was arrested in August and held in Pennsylvania before release. The Trump administration also arrested a 6-year-old girl and her mother, deporting the mother and detaining the child.

The specific reasons for Contreras' release remain unclear, according to his legal team. His mother, Raiza Contreras, and advocates traveled overnight to Pennsylvania to collect him. His case underscored the vulnerability of immigrant students within the public school system and the increasing use of arrest tactics against minors during the Trump administration.
