NY Academy of Art Repays $96K to Epstein Fund After New Revelations

The New York Academy of Art announced it will give away $65,900 to an organization helping trafficked girls after newly released Justice Department files revealed more extensive ties to Jeffrey Epstein than previously known. The school had already returned $30,000 in earlier donations from the disgraced financier.

Epstein, who served on the academy's board in the early 1990s, attended fund-raising events including the Tribeca Ball and Take Home a Nude auction. The files showed he was courted to sponsor a scholarship program years after his 2008 Florida conviction for soliciting prostitution from minors. The academy admitted to 'serious failures in judgment and governance' in accepting contributions and allowing his continued involvement.

Board chair Eileen Guggenheim, who introduced Epstein to former student Maria Farmer in 1993, will step down a month earlier than planned. The school is creating an ethics committee to review philanthropy policies and announced new safeguards for students. Farmer had previously reported Epstein's behavior to authorities in 1996 but said Guggenheim did not take her concerns seriously at the time.
