A software error at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has led to approximately 400 noncitizens casting ballots in recent elections, according to Governor Mikie Sherrill. The glitch also resulted in about 6,600 noncitizens being registered to vote.

Governor Sherrill stated that the error occurred due to a failure to properly process a "change of status" for individuals who were not U.S. citizens. The commission has since implemented a fix to prevent further erroneous registrations and is working to identify and remove the noncitizens who were improperly registered.

While the number of noncitizens who actually voted is estimated to be around 400, the total number of noncitizens registered to vote due to the error is significantly higher. Officials are reviewing the situation to understand the full scope of the impact and ensure the integrity of future elections.
