Moss, a resilient bryophyte that can grow in virtually any environment, holds clues that investigators often overlook. Forensic botanists like Christopher Hardy of Millersville University have used moss growth patterns to estimate postmortem timelines, with one case in Pennsylvania determining remains had been in the woods for at least a year. The tiny plants can attach to clothing, survive adverse conditions, and provide critical evidence.

Researchers have published two papers in Forensic Sciences Research cataloging moss's forensic applications and detailing the Burr Oak investigation. The Field Museum in Chicago helped identify specific moss species that linked suspects to crime scenes. Law enforcement officials now recognize moss as an unexpected but integral clue, particularly when traditional evidence like witnesses or cameras are unavailable.
