MetLife Stadium Becomes New York New Jersey Stadium for World Cup

FIFA will strip the corporate badge from the Meadowlands venue for the 2026 World Cup, temporarily renaming it New York New Jersey Stadium. The 80,000‑seat arena, home to the Giants and Jets, has displayed MetLife’s signage since a 2011 naming‑rights deal. Ticket holders will see generic signage on match day, eliminating the usual branding.

FIFA’s brand‑protection policy bans sponsor visibility that could eclipse its own partners, echoing the Olympics’ no‑naming rule. While the 2028 Los Angeles Games will allow venue sponsors to pay for name rights, the 2026 soccer event forces a rebrand: San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, Mexico City Stadium and Toronto Stadium replace Levi’s, Estadio Banorte and BMO Field. Fans will see the neutral moniker on broadcast graphics and tickets.

MetLife agreed to a 25‑year, $17 million‑a‑year naming‑rights contract when it secured the stadium’s title in 2011, making the temporary rebrand a costly inconvenience. Removing four massive illuminated signs and countless interior logos will require coordination with host‑city officials, underscoring how stadium naming rights can become a liability during major events. The venue will revert to its original name after the tournament.
