Meta was ordered to pay $567 million into an abatement fund in New Mexico as part of a public nuisance case related to alleged harms caused by its apps. The fund comes on top of $375 million in civil penalties paid earlier this year for violating the state's unfair practices act. Judge Bryan Biedscheid wrote that Meta's social media platforms are a significant contributing factor to the mental health crisis among New Mexico's youth. $420 million of the fund is dedicated to treatment for people harmed by the platform, with the remainder supporting awareness, prevention, and evaluation efforts.

The case is considered a 'Big Tobacco' moment for social media companies.
