An empty 42,377-square-foot warehouse at 800 Corporate Boulevard in Newburgh, N. Y., may become an ICE detention center, sparking community outrage. The property appears on a list of federally owned or leased sites, and its proximity to Stewart Airport makes it suitable for detainee transport.

This comes as a New York State law barring local law enforcement from sharing resources with ICE takes effect Tuesday, forcing ICE to seek new facilities. Only Rensselaer County and Nassau County have not confirmed ending ICE agreements; Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Gov. Kathy Hochul's Republican challenger, defended the partnership, citing over 2,000 deportations.

Attorney General Letitia James issued subpoenas to both counties. Hochul stated "no county executive should think that they are above the law" but has not committed to executive action blocking the warehouse. Her spokeswoman Jen Goodman said the administration will ensure facilities aren't built without community input.

Documents from Project Saltbox revealed ICE sought a 35,000-square-foot facility with emergency power and 24/7 access. Hochul wrote to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin requesting details on Newburgh, Rochester, and Batavia projects but received no response. Over 60 lawmakers urged Hochul to issue an executive order blocking such conversions.
