Artemis Ghasemzadeh, a 28-year-old Iranian Christian convert, became the face of migrants deported by the United States to Panama. After fleeing religious persecution in Iran, she and her brother entered the U.S. illegally in December 2024 but were caught by border patrol and separated. In February 2025, she was shackled and flown to Panama in one of the Trump administration's first third-country deportation experiments.

Locked in a Panama City hotel and later detained in the Darién jungle, she made viral social media videos that drew international attention. Her case led to the Artemis Act, introduced by Representative Yassamin Ansari in May 2025. Ghasemzadeh received Canadian asylum in June and arrived on Denman Island near Vancouver in July, calling it a new beginning.

Her brother Shahin was granted asylum in Texas.
