ICE Lawyer Julie Le Runs for Congress After Viral Outburst

Julie T. Le, a former Department of Homeland Security lawyer whose courtroom breakdown over immigration cases went viral, announced she's running for Congress in Minnesota's 5th District. The 47-year-old attorney gained national attention after telling a judge during a February hearing that she wished to be held in contempt just to get some sleep.

Le's outburst came amid the Trump administration's aggressive immigration crackdown in Minnesota, where she described being overwhelmed by hundreds of lawsuits challenging detention practices. Her comments - "The system sucks. This job sucks" - broke from typical government lawyer decorum and highlighted the strain on legal resources. She served less than a year as an assistant chief counsel before leaving her post.

Le now aims to unseat Representative Ilhan Omar in the Democratic primary, positioning herself as a moderate alternative. While Omar has called for abolishing ICE, Le said she wants to reform the system through negotiation and compromise. The Minnesota primary is August 11, and Le faces an uphill battle against the incumbent's strong name recognition and donor network in Minneapolis.
