Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed Tuesday he will accompany President Donald Trump on the administration’s scheduled visit to China later this week. The pairing follows a long‑standing practice of senior defense officials traveling with presidents to offer military counsel and project U.S. force posture abroad. Hegseth’s inclusion marks his third China‑related trip since taking office in the region.

Trump’s delegation will also feature Secretary of State Marco Rubio and more than a dozen CEOs, underscoring the commercial dimension of the talks. Bilateral agenda items include the Iran‑related Strait of Hormuz blockade, lingering trade frictions, and Taiwan policy. Xi Jinping has publicly urged Washington to reopen the strait, where China imports roughly a third of its oil and gas.

Pentagon officials reiterate that China remains the premier security challenge despite the White House’s recent pivot toward the Western Hemisphere. Under‑Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael warned at a Washington security forum that Beijing has pursued the largest military buildup in history over the past 15 years. Hegseth’s presence signals Washington’s intent to keep defense issues front‑and‑center in the talks.
