Hantavirus outbreak halts luxury Antarctic cruise

A hantavirus outbreak has gripped the luxury cruise ship Hondius, which has been sailing the Antarctic spring migration. Three passengers are dead and four are ill as the vessel remains anchored off Cape Verde, awaiting Spanish inspection before any further movement. Oceanwide Expeditions, the operator, says it has imposed isolation, hygiene protocols and medical monitoring, and the ship's itinerary has been suspended.

Health officials are uneasy because hantavirus normally spreads from rodent droppings, yet several cases involved close contact among passengers, and one couple may have been infected before boarding. The World Health Organization rates the global risk as low, while the CDC notes a 35% fatality rate in the United States, underscoring the seriousness for travelers on niche expedition cruises.

The incident arrives as cruise traffic rebounds, with 35 million passengers in 2024, up from 30 million in 2019, though expedition voyages account for just about 1% of that volume. Passengers like influencer Jake Rosmarin have voiced anxiety over confinement and uncertain repatriation. With no specific antiviral treatment, care relies on oxygen and heart‑lung support, leaving operators to manage both health and reputational fallout.
